In 1824, the procession became public and sláinte, the modern-day parade began! Since then, Savannah’s celebration has evolved to include more marchers and spectators in a citywide celebration of Irish culture. Don Adams, owner of Kelly Tours, began offering bleacher seating for visitors and locals at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2000. The ceremony is meant to pay respect to Savannah’s original St. Patrick’s Day celebrations back in the early 1800s. Feast of St. Patrick Mass. Before the St. Patrick’s Day parade begins, Savannah’s Irish Catholic community gathers at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist for morning Mass. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is in its 196th year. The first publicly-held St. Patrick’s Day parade was in 1824 and organized by the Hibernian Society. “The parade was pretty much established for the purpose of the Irish families celebrating the patron saint of St. Patrick,” explains Norris.
