St. Patrick's Day is not usually associated with African Americans. In fact, to African Americans it has often been a reminder of the great political divide between themselves and the refugees I’ve always been suspicious that the American way of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day reeks of anti-Irish prejudice. It’s well-known that during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the many Irish immigrants who poured into the United States during and after the Potato Famine faced discrimination in their new home. The commemoration of St. Patrick and his people ought to inspire us to work for all people who have been and continue to be oppressed by marginalization and discrimination. Eventually, as generations came and went, they became accepted in America and held amazing St. Patrick's Day parades every March 17th to honor their patron saint. You would think that the racist rhetoric would be over in 2018 but it's not. Adorned with neon shamrocks, scrawled in a vaguely Celtic font, they all advertise the same thing — St. Patrick’s Day bar crawls. There’s nothing inherently wrong with a St. Patrick’s Day bar crawl. There’s not even anything wrong with the eye-popping Kelly green or clover clip art these posters use. “The early St. Patrick's Day was about building up Irish Americans. It was about showing pride and building St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan. It was about establishing the Irish as political power, as cultural power, and this was in the face of a lot of anti-Irish racism,” McDevitt said. One of the most controversial aspects of Saint Patrick’s legacy is the question of whether he was racist towards the indigenous people of Ireland. Some historians point to passages in his own writings where he refers to the Irish as “barbarians” and “heathens,” suggesting a sense of superiority and disdain towards the native population. Higgins added that the circumstances faced by St. Patrick resonate with many people's modern-day circumstances, stating that "racism is increasing rather than decreasing, in so many parts of the President Michael D Higgins has highlighted and condemned racism in his message to mark St Patrick's Day. In a wide-ranging speech, he also addressed the global issues of forced migration, poverty day you saw a fat white guy wearing a t shirt saying "i'm black for a day!" and it had a picture of a cartoon stereotypical what if on martin luther king jr. day you saw a fat white guy wearing There are people who find Saint Patrick's Day to be offensive - usually on the grounds that St. Patrick replaced native pagan culture with Christian culture. There's also a meme going around saying that St. Patrick "murdered" pagans, but I'm not sure how much r/badhistory material is in there. ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – An 18-year-old has been charged with spray-painting racist graffiti on two schools in the Affton School District within the past week. The parades have been around for years! the first parade for St. Paddy's day wasn't even in Ireland all them years ago it actually started in America. And the drink excuse is because we're "Irish" and we have a stereotype for being drunk. Jimmy Kimmel, racist quip at the Oscars about fighting Irish President Biden, racist quip at St Patrick's Day ceremony about Irish being drunk and in prison Every American on the internet, goddamn *Patty's Day" which isn't racist, just incredibly ignorant This comment, and thousands like it, which is obviously racist Ancient Order of the Hibernians' Pat Hume and Mike Tiernan joined the morning show to talk about the St. Patrick's Day Parade happening on March 15 at 11 a.m. in Belleville. Girls in the Know It’s not racist. Everything you’ve listed, excusing the green decorations, is a product of how Northern America celebrates St Patrick’s Day. If you want to disown that celebration, go right ahead. Nothing to do with us. St. Patrick’s Day observes of the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. The holiday has evolved into a celebration of Irish culture with parades, special foods, music, dancing, drinking and a whole lot of green.
