To celebrate my first video for the holiday, I'll be reviewing a Looney Tunes cartoon that's not only a St.Paddy's Day sho The Wearing of the Grin was the final cartoon featuring Porky Pig as the only major recurring character. Porky had been Warner Bros. animation's first major star until he had been supplanted first by Daffy Duck (a phenomenon that was foreshadowed in film form in Friz Freleng’s You Ought to Be in Pictures), and later by Bugs Bunny. I thought I’d use today to look at a few of the uses of St. Patrick’s Day themes (or Irish references in general) in cartoons. Looney Tunes. The 1951 Porky Pig cartoon “The Wearing of the Grin” has Porky staying at a castle secretly run by leprechauns, who dislike the thought of an outsider infringing on their territory. Some might argue that the short doesn't explicitly take place on March 17th, but with all the leprechaun mischief and Irish symbols (like harps and shamrocks), I think it has enough Irish detail to qualify as a "holiday" short.
