Unofficial has since turned into the biggest drinking holiday in Champaign/Urbana. You can expect to see a bunch of people wearing green, people getting drunk during lectures, and tons of parties and bar crawls. Unofficial is said to have originated in 1995, and it is essentially an alternate St. Patrick’s Day on the University of Illinois campus. Because St. Patrick’s Day falls during spring break, some local bar owners came up with idea to celebrate an “unofficial” St. Patrick’s Day on campus. The Financial Aid Office will notify the student and/or parent of the amount of financial aid that has been removed from the student’s University account and returned to the financial aid programs. The return of funds to financial aid programs are processed at least weekly and always within thirty days from the date the withdrawal was processed. Short for Unofficial St. Patrick's Day, it allows students to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Champaign-Urbana, even though the University is generally on spring break on March 17th. Celebrations generally involve copious drinking at bars or private residences and start early on the morning of the chosen day.
