Starting at Mad Dogs British Pub. Each year since 1968 the River Walk is magically transformed into the River Shannon through 25-gallons of eco-friendly green dye. The San Antonio River Walk becomes a focal point for festivities every St. Patrick’s Day, with traditions including a vibrant parade and the iconic river dyeing ceremony. Origins of St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations. St. Patrick’s Day began as a religious feast day in the 17th century to commemorate St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Another fun way to enjoy St. Patrick’s Day in San Antonio doesn’t involve beer or heavy food! Runners can enjoy some holiday Riverwalk time by taking part in the annual St. Patrick’s Day 5K along the San Antonio river. The race will be held on Saturday, March 15 and prizes will go to the best costumes and green gear.
