When the St. Patrick’s Day massacre occurred, the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins had only been around for a short while. The fight happened on March 17, 2002, when we were only in our third season in a home game against the Syracuse Crunch. This fear and anger was not limited to New York City. In Syracuse, on March 17, 1863, several dozen young men and boys were encouraged, whether by design or from a warped sense of using their St. Patrick’s day revelry as an excuse, to assault several local African-Americans out on the street. They often used clubs and stones. On February 13, 1855, just about a month before St. Patrick’s Day, 1,700 delegates to the New York State Council of Know Nothings convened in Syracuse’s Corinthian Hall.
