The St Patrick’s Day parade in Abbeyleix has been cancelled, less than a week before the big day. Traditionally one of the best parades in the county, the event will not go ahead as planned next Monday 17 March. In a statement on social media yesterday, 12 March, the Abbeyleix St Patrick’s Day Committee said: ‘Due to a culmination of St Patrick’s Day is all about representing your community and those in Durrow and Abbeyleix were not found wanting today. Abbeyleix was out of the traps first with their parade getting underway at 12pm. The rain was falling from the sky at that stage but this didn’t deter those involved. Abbeyleix in county Laois was lit up in a sea of green for this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade.
